The first weekend of the month Memphis in May International Festival, the roots of the Beale Street Music Festival can be traced back to the 19th century. Hosting nearly every blues pioneer you can think of over the last 40 years, this one has been extended to include a large variety of musicians.
Memphis devotes every year in May the celebration of Memphis to a specific country and culture. Columbia, Canada, and Poland are only a handful of the nations that have been celebrated with theme festivals and educational activities taking place in the region in recent years. This year, Memphis in May honors Ghana’s history and heritage.
Memphis is renowned for its bbq, and it makes sense to hold a massive competition every year to determine who is the greatest meat-smoker and sauce-slathered in the country. Everyone can play, or even go out and gawk in the lavish squad tents. They also launched BBQ Alley, a limited-capacity opportunity that enables everyone in the park to sample the championship-quality ‘que from Big Green Egg and other renowned barbecue restaurants. But the good smells are plentiful, and the celebrations are pleasant, so it’s worth a visit.
